1. Introduction to General Pharmacology

Course objectives At the end of the course the student should be able to describe how drugs act on the body and how the body deals with the drugs.

2. Pharmacology of Autonomic Nervous System

Course objectives
At the end of the course the student should be able to describe the effect of drugs on adrenergic and cholinergic nervous system and application of such effect in therapeutics.

  1. Introduction to Autonomic Nervous System
  2. Cholinergic Agonists
  3. Cholinergic Antagonists
  4. Adrenergic Agonists
  5. Adrenergic Antagonists
  6. Muscle Relaxants

3. Drugs Acting on Cardiovascular system


Course objectives
At the end of the course the student should be able to identify the drugs which act on different cardiovascular diseases, their mechanism of action, adverse effects, and their indications.
  1. Antihypertensive Drugs
  2. Drugs for cardiac Arrhythmia
  3. Drugs for cardiac Failure
  4. Drugs for ischemic Heart Diseases
  5. Diuretic drugs
  6. Antihyperlipidemic drugs

4. Drugs acting on smooth muscles (7 hours)

COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course the student should be able to describe the effect of drugs on smooth muscles on different organs

  1. Histamine & antihistamine drugs
  2. Serotonin & antiserotonin drugs
  3. Prostaglandins
  4. Drugs acting on bronchial muscles

5. Drugs acting on Central nervous system (I) (10 hours)

Course Objectives
At the end of the course the student should be able to identify the drugs which act on C.N.S in relation with pathophysiology of certain psychiatric diseases

  1. Narcotic analgesics
  2. Antidepressants
  3. Sedative & hypnotic
  4. C.N.S. stimulants
  5. Alcohol

6. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (4 hours)

Course objectives
At the end of the course the student should be able to identify the drugs which has anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and analgesic effects .also drugs beneficial effects in gout

  1. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
  2. Drugs used in gout

1. Drugs Affecting Endocrine System and its Diseases (14 hours)

Course objectives

 At the end of this course, the student is able to understand physiology of different gland and clinical uses of drugs and hormone preparations affecting such glands.

  1. Pharmacology of pituitary and hypothalamic hormones
  2. Thyroid hormones and antithyroid drugs
  3. Estrogen, progesterone and inhibitors
  4. Oral contraceptives & HRT
  5. Androgen
  6. Drugs for diabetes mellitus: Insulin and oral antidiabetic agents
  7. Adrenocorticosteroids[Corticosteroids and antagonists]
  8. Parathyroid hormones and drugs affecting calcium balance
  9. Drugs acting on uterus
  10. Drug treatment for infertility and erectile dysfunctions

2. Pharmacology of Chemotherapeutic Agents(18 hours)

Course objectives

At the end of this course, the student should be able to recognize and understand the different types of targets for chemotherapeutic drugs, and how these mechanisms relate to selective toxicity as well as mechanisms of resistance to the action of antibiotics and strategies to avoid them.

  4. β-Lactam antibiotics
  5. Aminoglycosides
  6. Macrolides and ketolides
  7. Tetracycline and chloramphenicol
  8. Immunomodulators

  10. Antifungal drugs
  11. Anti amoebic and other antiprotozoal drugs
  12. Anthelmintic agents
  13. Antiviral, anti-AIDS drugs
  14. Chemotherapy of Urinary tract infection & STDs
  15. Basic principles of cancer chemotherapy

3. Drugs acting on Central nervous system (II) (10 hours)

Course objectives
At the end of the course the student should be able to identify the drugs which act on C.N.S in relation with pathophysiology of certain psychiatric and neurological diseases. Also, to understand mechanisms of action of local and general anesthesia

  1. Antipsychotics
  2. Anti-parkinson drugs
  3. Anti-epileptics
  4. Local anesthetics
  5. General anesthetics

4. Drugs affecting haemopoietic system (3 hours)

Course objectives
At the end of the course the student should be able to identify the drugs which has Antiplatelet, thrombolytic, and anticoagulant effects .also drugs beneficial effects in treatment of anemia

  1. Drugs for anemia
  2. Antiplatelet, thrombolytic, and anticoagulant drugs.
