On Thursday, October 24, 2024, a 17-year-old female patient underwent surgery at the Neuroscience Hospital. She had been experiencing eye deviation and headache. Upon MRI examination, a cyst was found in the left hemisphere of the brain, the dominant lobe that controls the movement of the opposite side of the body. The cyst had to be completely removed without rupture to prevent infection and severe spread. Hydatid cysts in the brain are often caused by food contaminated with parasites, as humans act as intermediate hosts. The medical team, led by Professor Dr. Abdul Ameer Jasim Mohammed Al-Khafaji, a faculty member in the Surgery Department at Al-Nahrain College of Medicine, along with a group of resident doctors in training for Iraqi board certification, successfully removed the cyst to save the patient’s life, thankfully without complications.
